Growing Galway Food is inviting small food producers as well as retail and hospitality food buyers to participate in an online survey of food production in Galway as part of its aims to develop a county wide strategy for food in Galway, to contribute to the future development of the sector by fostering cooperation and cohesion amongst food producers and to build relationships between food producers and buyers in the retail, catering and hospitality sectors.

I visited the 2012 Young Scientist Exhibition last week and came across a couple of interesting projects which demonstrate that there are teenagers out there putting their brains to work in the food sector. It is only when you see that many enthusiastic kids under one roof you think, yes, perhaps we can create a bright future, but not if we lose them to foreign climes permanently.

With Kilkenny’s Food Strategy now on hold since January, Kilkenny Leader Partnership, has renewed calls to Government to solve the current EU food funding crisis. Confusion over the allocation of EU funds for rural Irish food businesses arose earlier this year resulting in the indefinite suspension of Leader funding for the Irish food sector.

IFA president John Bryan said he welcomed the latest report from the EPA on water quality which shows significant improvement in the level of nitrates and phosphates during the period 2007 to 2009.

Growth in food and beverage sector could be hampered by proposed legislation

Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII), the IBEC group that represents the food sector, has published the findings of a new survey, which indicates that the strong export performance of the food and beverage sector last year is to continue in 2011. The group however warned that poorly thought out legislation, such as the Climate Change Bill as currently proposed, risks damaging the sector's competitiveness and derailing its export growth potential.
